Warn on Skin
Silver jewelry loves your body. The natural oils in your skin - but not perspiration (see Dry, below) - will help to keep silver tarnish free. So don’t worry and relax, wear your beautiful Sterling silver jewelry as often as your heart desires.
Dry
Sterling silver jewelry should be removed before doing any activity that will expose it to moisture. This will help keep it tarnish and discolouration free. This includes water, sweat (so take off before perspiring), liquid products, and vapours.
If applying lotion or any other liquid products (e.g. perfume, hand sanitizer, etc., ...), apply the product first, then let your skin dry before adding accents of jewelry.
In the Shade
Do not expose jewelry to excessive sunlight. The UV light will cause Sterling silver to tarnish.
Chemical Free
It is best practice to remove jewelry before doing any activity that will expose Sterling silver to fumes or chemicals (including natural lotions).
Be Mindful Of
- Cooking (e.g. onion fumes, frying eggs, etc., ...)
- Cleaning (scent of cleaning products)
- Morning routine (e.g. applying lotions, hair spray, cosmetics, etc., …)
Wait 15 minutes after applying any lotion, makeup, hair product, or perfume before wearing jewelry.
Sulphur Free
Generally, anything that contains sulphur should be avoided. The presence of sulphur is the number one thing that will tarnish Sterling silver.
Some things that Contain Sulphur
- Wool
- Rubber gloves (except nitrile which is fine)
- Hot springs (will tarnish silver to black quickly)
Clean
At the end of the day, give the jewelry piece(s) a wipe down or polish (see Cleaning Tips), before storing. This will remove any dirt or tarnish that may have built up, even if unseen.
